| SUV Vs. Pole in East Ridge EAST RIDGE, TENN – At about 2:20 PM, Saturday, January 3, 2009, the East Ridge Fire Department received a call of a motor vehicle accident with injuries and a car split in half. East Ridge Quint 1 responded and located a Ford Explorer against a wooden telephone pole at 1099 McBrien Road. Also involved was a parked Buick Reatta. The Explorer struck the pole on the passenger side and there was major intrusion on that side of the vehicle. The wooden pole split in half and came down on the vehicle. A large piece of the pole, about thirty feet long split away from the pole and landed about thirty feet away, sticking into the ground. A large transformer attached to the pole broke loose and leaked oil into the street. The driver of the vehicle self extricated prior to the arrival of the fire department. He did sustain some injuries and medics with Lifeguard EMS provided care on the scene. He was packaged and transported to the hospital with non life threatening injuries. There were no other passengers in the vehicle and no one in the parked Reatta. The East Ridge Police Department is investigating the accident. There was constant rain in the area throughout the day and the roads were very slick. |
