Blaze Destroys Chattanooga Home

CHATTANOOGA, TENN – Just before 11:00 PM, Saturday, March 6, 2010, the Chattanooga Fire
Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire near the intersection of Shallowford Road
and Jenkins Road.  The Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched on the same call.
Some homes in this area are in the city while others are in Hamilton County and require a response
from Tri-Community.

Chattanooga Quint 8 was the first to arrive and found a house at 8012 Shallowford Road with heavy
fire involvement.  The house sits way back from the roadway up a steep, narrow driveway.  The same
house had been victim to a fire in December and firefighters had difficulty maneuvering the
apparatus up the driveway at that fire.  Quint 8 managed to navigate the driveway and Capt Jeff
Eldridge took command.  Quint 21, Quint 13 and Squad 3 all arrived and assisted in attacking the fire.

Firefighters were able to quickly determine that the house was unoccupied due to the previous fire
and fought this blaze from a defensive posture from the beginning.  When Chief Winston Shields
arrived he took command of the scene and ordered Quint 8 to put up the stick and flow water from
above.  Firefighters also stretched a 2 ½ inch line to the side of the house and began flowing water
from it as well.

Hamilton County EMS provided medics for standby but there were no reported injuries.  Traffic
control was handled by the Chattanooga Police Department who shut down Shallowford Road
between Jenkins Road and Ranch Hill Road for the safety of the firefighters.

Although no damage estimate has been made, tax records indicate that the two story, 3500 square
foot home and surrounding five acres were sold in April 2009 for $510,000.  The structure was totally
destroyed by the fire.  Arson investigators from the Chattanooga Fire Department were on the scene
to establish the cause and origin of the fire.
