Crash Reenactment for Seniors at Ooltewah High School

OOLTEWAH, TENN – With prom only two days away and graduation a scant three weeks out,
the Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department and
Hamilton County EMS teamed up with Ooltewah High School to stage a fatal accident scene and
teach the seniors about highway safety.

On the morning of Thursday, April 23, 2009, emergency services workers placed two vehicles
together in a staged crash.  All of the seniors gathered around the crash site and waited.  A
smoke bomb was placed under the hood of one car.  Inside one of the vehicles were two
students dressed for the prom.  Inside another were three students and a fourth was lying on the
ground as if she had been ejected from the vehicle.  As law enforcement, medics and firefighters
arrived they set about doing the tasks that would normally be performed at a major accident
scene.  The injured were treated and one was loaded into a waiting ambulance.  The driver of
one of the cars, suspected of being impaired, was given a field sobriety test and then arrested
for DUI.  The young lady who posed as the deceased was covered with a sheet.  Shortly
thereafter, a woman posing as her mother, arrived on the scene and had to be physically
restrained.

Students were reminded about using seat belts and ensuring that they did not consume alcohol
and drive.  All those gathered were quite attentive to the reenactment and seemed to
understand the seriousness of the situation.

The vehicles used in the simulation were donated by Dentons Wrecker Service.
