Fort Oglethorpe Works Single Vehicle vs. Pole

FORT OGLETHORPE, GA – At about 11:45 AM, Thursday, July 24, 2009, Fort Oglethorpe Fire
and Rescue responded to a reported MVC with injuries involving a single vehicle vs. a wooden
power pole in the 2100 block of Lafayette Road.  Engine 1 arrived to find a white Ford sedan that
had struck a power pole, splintering it part way up the pole.  The vehicle sustained major front end
damage and the driver was still inside.

Firefighters began assessing the patient and providing basic life support as well as preparing for
extrication of the driver.  After surveying the scene, firefighters and medics decided to remove the
patient from the passenger side of the vehicle.  The young female driver was strapped to a
backboard and placed in a waiting ambulance.  Angel EMS transported the patient to Erlanger
Medical Center.  She was not responding to verbal commands while being treated at the scene
and was possibly suffering from some type of head injury.

The pole that was struck was moved almost eight inches in the ground from the impact.  The Fort
Oglethorpe Police Department is investigating the accident.  Firefighters from Fort Oglethorpe
Engine 8, Battalion Chief Doug Flury (907) and Assistant Chief Glenn Davis (903) also assisted at
the scene.
