| Overnight Fire Keeps Walker County Firefighters Busy WALKER COUNTY, GA - At about 1:00 AM, Sunday, October 18, 2009, Walker County Emergency Services received a 9-1-1 call reporting a residential structure fire at 3 Fisher Road. The caller reported the house heavily involved in fire with possible entrapment. When firefighters arrived on the scene they found a large two story house fully involved in fire. A pickup truck in front of the structure was also heavily involved as was an outbuilding adjacent to the house. Engine 7 was the first apparatus on the scene and firefighters pulled two inch and three quarter lines and began a fast attack on the flames from two different sides of the building. Unfortunately the large amount of fire prevented an immediate interior attack and the Chief on scene ordered firefighters to assume a defensive posture. Firefighters efforts were hampered by water supply problems. There was no hydrant in the immediate area and the house sat at the end of a long narrow street which made it difficult to get apparatus close to the fire. Firefighters were forced to stretch several hundred feet of five inch supply line from an engine on Lytle Road and shuttled water to there. The fire was originally spotted by a person dropping someone off at a house across the street. Neighbors and the landlord reported that quite a few people lived in the house including several teenagers and at least one some child. The man of the house works the overnight shift and was not expected to be there but the rest of the occupants are unaccounted for as of this report. Primary and secondary searches by firefighters were negative but damage was extensive. The entire house was destroyed by fire. A monetary amount is unknown at this time. The cause and origin of the fire are unknown and under investigation. Firefighters worked throughout the night to bring the fire under control and doing overhaul. |
