Family of Four Homeless After Overnight Fire in Catoosa County

CATOOSA COUNTY, GA -  At about 4:30 AM, Monday, November 16, 2009 the Catoosa county
Fire Department was alerted to what was initially referred to as a back porch on fire at 75
Apache Trail in the Indian Springs Subdivision.  Catoosa Engine 3, Engine 1 and Engine 6
responded immediately.  Engine 3 arrived on the scene very quickly and reported a single story
brick with heavy smoke and fire showing.

Attack lines were pulled and firefighters immediately began an interior attack in an effort to knock
down the fire which was running the attic and involved the rear of the house.  Fire had already
self vented the roof prior to their arrival.  Engine 1 laid a supply line from a nearby hydrant and
all hands went to work.  Command requested an additional engine company and Fort
Oglethorpe Engine 8 responded.

At one point the fire was so heavy command evacuated everyone from the structure and went
defensive using the deck gun from Engine 3 to knock down the fire.  Once that was completed
crews immediately re-entered the structure and went back to work.  Unfortunately the fire had a
major head start on firefighters and they were unable to save the vast majority of the house and
its contents.

The fire is believed to have started somewhere either on or around the back porch but the exact
location and cause are under investigation at this time.  The homeowner, his wife, teenage son
and two year old child were asleep when the fire broke out.  The homeowner stated that he
looked outside his window because he thought he heard the wind blowing and saw the house on
fire.  He got the family outside and called 9-1-1.

Catoosa County Truck 3 provided air services and Chattanooga Hamilton County Rescue was
on the scene with rehab.  The Catoosa county Sheriff’s Department was also on the scene.
Firefighters from GDC 9 (Georgia Department of Corrections) also responded to assist with
overhaul.
