Chattanooga Fights Late Night House Fire

CHATTANOOGA, TENN – Shortly after 11:00 PM, Friday, November 20, 2009, the Chattanooga
Fire Department was dispatched to a garage fire at 8419 Iris Drive.  Quint 21 arrived on the scene
to find a two story brick residence with heavy smoke and fire showing from one end of the
building.  Firefighters pulled an inch and three quarter attack line and began aggressively fighting
the fire while the engineer hand jacked a supply line to a hydrant at the corner of Iris Drive and
Chestnutwood Lane.

As additional apparatus arrived more fighters joined in the fight against the blaze.  Firefighters
made their way through a cluttered garage to make an interior attack and were forced to cut
through one of the garage doors with a K-12 saw in order to make entry.  The fire, which
appeared to have originated in the garage, had worked its way into the attic prior to their arrival
and self vented through the roof.  Using foam to help knock the fire down firefighters were able to
quickly gain the upper hand and get the fire under control.

The homeowners were present when the fire broke out.  They reported smelling a burning odor
and began checking the house.  When they opened the garage door from inside the house they
were met with fire and smoke.  They quickly got all of their dogs outside and called 9-1-1.  They
escaped without injury.

The exact cause and origin of the fire are under investigation by the Chattanooga Fire
Department Investigations Division.  Damage to the house is extensive but the exact amount is
unknown at this time.  Hamilton County EMS responded for standby but there were no injuries
reported.
